Another month is in the books. May’s NPD sales numbers are in, with a ton of interesting takes. PlayStation 4 took the top spot, followed by the Xbox One in console sales. Hardware sales also seem to be doing great overall. Compared to this time in the last generation of consoles, “the PS4 and Xbox One have 43 percent higher cumulative sales right now when compared against this same point in the previous generation of hardware sales.”

The NPD Group’s Liam Callahan had this to say about the month in a whole. “Overall trends across new physical software, hardware, and accessories in May 2016 rose by 4 percent, or $19.3MM, due to 18 percent growth of new physical software, which offset the 10 percent decline of hardware, and the 2 percent decline in accessories. ”

Here are the top 10 software sales for the month of May. (The console order is in terms of which sold highest on the platforms)

May 2016

1. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (PS4)
2. Doom 2016 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
3. Overwatch (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
4. Battleborn (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
5. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3,  PC)
6. Minecraft (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
7. NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
8. Call of Duty: Black Ops III (Xbox One, PS4, PS3, 360, PC)
9. MLB 16: The Show (PS4, PS3)
10. Dark Souls III (PS4, Xbox One)

It’s also relevant to note that Overwatch released very late in the month. Callahan expects Overwatch to do great in the month of June and said this about the Overwatch sales. “When comparing Overwatch sales for days in the market, this title doubled the sales of Doom.”

It’s also worth noting that Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 sold best on Xbox One, despite Sony having made a deal to get all the DLC a month before Microsoft. It seems that Xbox will always be the home for Call of Duty players.

All in all, this seems like another great month for gaming. Let us know if anything jumps out at you from these numbers in the comments below!
