Welcome back to another featured DFG (Dumpster Fire Games) article where I break-down rumors/click-bait articles and give you real hard facts about the matter.  The subject of this weeks DFG article is Portal 3.  Yes, you read that right….Portal 3.  Both Half-Life 3 and Portal 3 have been heavily rumored topics for years now so this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.  I want to first discuss the rumor and the source behind it to then go into if there is any possible way the rumor could end up true or false with actual evidence.

This weeks rumor began to ignite over at another website called, The Crazy Hunters, and well they are definitely crazy.  They believe that a video uploaded to YouTube is early signs of an official announcement of Portal 3.  This video which can be seen below, is by YouTube user, Stefano Cagnani.

If you watched the video above, well you can quickly see at the beginning that it has the official logos of Valve & Steam at the start.  The video then pans over a couple environments to then show an Aperture Laboratories sign in a damaged mess.  If this doesn’t scream fake, then I don’t know what does.

Now let me break down the guy behind this video as I did a little research behind Mr. Stefano Cagnani.  The first thing I searched was for Stefano on LinkedIn and I quickly got a hit.

His job title is Professionista nel settore Animazione which is italian for Professional in the entertainment industry so needless to say this guy doesn’t have an actual job working for an animation company or for Valve.  Next, we did a quick search on Facebook and found this page:

The more I begin to research the individual behind the supposed “Portal 3 Official Announcement Trailer”, the more I see that it’s just a guy trying to see what he can do in the Unreal Engine in hopes of impressing a game company.  For a gaming website, to take and publish this as an official announcement for Portal 3 is wrong to their readers and to the gaming community alike.  Like I’ve said in other episodes of DFG, it’s wrong to mislead people.  With just doing a little research, I have quickly found out that this is a fake and it just a showcase of what Mr. Cagnani can do in the Unreal Engine.

Now, let’s see if we can provide any evidence supporting that Portal 3 is in development.

There aren’t many facts backing up the claim of a Portal 3 being in development, but there are a few that we will talk about.

In a recent Reddit AMA on 01/17/17, Gabe Newell, the co-founder of Valve, was asked the following question, “Any chance of a new IP that takes place in the half-life/portal universe?” and Gabe responded with “Yep”.

Now this could be related to Half-Life and not Portal, but there is a 50/50 chance that it could be.  Even though there is a 50/50 chance on what it is, Valve did file a trademark with the Trademarks and Design Registration Office of the European Union (OHIM) back in 2013.  And that trademark was verified by the OHIM, meaning it wasn’t some trying to troll the internet.

A new trailer for the HTC Vive Pre was revealed back in January for CES 2016, but as much as sneak peek of the now-released HTC Vive was back then, the trailer held a lot of emotional excitement when it reached around fifty-two seconds into the video.

A woman is seen wearing an almost identical clothing as Chell, in both Portal games.  Everyone took this as a hint of the next Portal game, a.k.a. Portal 3 supporting VR with the HTC Vive.

This was even furthered by the fact that Portal is seen within the “Robot Repair” section of the HTC Vive compilation known as The Lab.  The Lab features a number of mini-games, but the Robot Repair mini-game is where the player attempts to fix Atlas from Portal 2.  As the demo progresses the player actually sees a Portal room, complete with companion cube.

Now to refer back to that Reddit AMA that Gabe Newell did back in January 2017, Gabe was asked, “Hey Gabe! Is Valve interested in making a full game experience for the Vive? The Lab was great but we’d all love to get a full Valve game.” and he responded by saying, “Yes. We think VR is pretty important as a tool for interesting games.”

Unfortunately, this is all I could dig up as far as hard evidence on the possibility of a Portal 3 being in development.  It seems as though if Portal 3 is being developed that it will have VR support as far as the HTC Vive.  The thing is Valve is such a massive company and being it’s platform Steam makes them such a great amount of money, they shouldn’t ever have to make a game again if they didn’t want to.

I’m sure Portal 3 is in development in some form as well as Half-Life 3 and Left 4 Dead 3.  We may never see these projects, but if we do it will be when the time is right and Valve feels comfortable releasing it.
