Much to my personal dismay, Mighty No. 9 has been delayed once again. The spiritual successor to Mega Man was set to release in two weeks, on February 9th. Developer Comcept currently does not have a release window for the game either. The developer told Kickstarter backers the reason for the delay was because of network and porting issues. Comcept has stated that they have to now go back and rewrite the Unreal Engine 3 code because the technology is no longer supported.
Here is a quote provided by GameInformer from Comcept Founder Keiji Inafune about the delay and possible release window. “Because we are constantly working on it in cooperation with all our partners, we want to wait and make sure that everything is confirmed to be ready before giving a new specific release date,” writes Comcept founder Keiji Inafune. “But we expect it to realistically be in Spring 2016.”
Now for my personal spin on this story. As a huge Mega Man fan, I’m horribly disappointed by this delay. Mighty No. 9 being delayed for the second time signals red flags in my mind. The game was originally slated for release in April 2015, now it’s looking like it will release at least a year later than originally promised. The first delay was needed for “quality assurance”, with no mention of the current problems. I personally think something is deeply wrong with this game and that the network and code issues from Unreal Engine 3 are a scapegoat. This game was all I’ve wanted since Capcom put Mega Man on ice, but it looks like this could be a flop. Be very wary before purchasing this title. Wait for the reviews to come out.
